As a design philosophy and a way of life, minimalism become over the years quite popular.
The theory of minimalism is about achieving better design through simplicity – simplicity of form, space, details and color.
The term “minimalism” is also used to describe a trend in design and architecture where in the subject is reduced to its necessary elements.

Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe adopted the motto “Less is More” to describe his aesthetic tactic of arranging the numerous necessary components of a building to create a impression of extreme simplicity , by enlisting every element and detail to serve multiple visual and functional purposes; To emphasize the building’s frame , by elimination interior walls and adopting open plan.
The characteristics that exemplify modern minimalist design are:
- Clean, open, light-filled spaces
- Uncomplicated cladding, wall finishes
- Simplicity in form and function
- Simple decoration
- Strategic use of materials, texture, and personality

The structure uses relatively simple elegant designs; ornamentation are quality rather than quantity.
The beauty is determined by playing with lighting, using the basic geometric shapes as outlines, using only a single shape or a small number of shapes for design unity, using tasteful non-fussy bright color combinations, usually natural textures, clean and fine finishes.

In the project below, the material palette is limited to mostly concrete finishes and wood. Yet, the board-formed concrete provides texture and interest to the minimalist interior design.
Using sometimes the beauty of natural patterns on stone cladding and real wood encapsulated within ordered simplified structures, producing a simplified but prestigious architecture and interior design.
This bathroom feels pretty Zen with its beige walls and white porcelain vessel sink. The wood accent adds life and warmth.

Using color brightness balance and contrast between surface colors to improve visual aesthetics. The structure will usually have industrial and space age style utility (lamps, stairs, technology etc. ) neat and straight components (walls or stairs) flat roofs and large windows to let in lots of sunlight.
This and science fiction may have contributed to the late 20th century futuristic architecture design, and modern home decor.

Modern minimalist home architecture with its unnecessary internal walls removed probably have led to the popularity of the open kitchen and living room style.
Spacious rooms filled with light, wide sight lines and an uncluttered aesthetic are typical of many minimalist interiors.
Only the necessary furniture and accessories are used so that objects have some breathing room. The abundance of natural light adds to the ambiance of the space, helping it feel warm and cozy rather than cold and sterile.

Using simple continuous cladding material can easily provide visual appeal by expressing the physical characteristics of the materials and their texture.
The boxy form and clean window opening are a modern minimalist solution for any design.
Minimalism aims for simplicity and objectivity. It wants to reduce works to the fundamental, the essential, the necessary, and to strip away the ornamental layers that might be placed on top.
Minimalist designs tend toward more white space, better typography, grid layouts, and less color.

“Minimalism is using less to do more. In order to do minimalism well, you need a strong understanding of basic design principles. When you master minimalism you master design.”
